We stumbled out onto the sun-baked platform in Ngaoundere at 3 PM, the equatorial heat a stark contrast to the train's air-conditioned chill. A whirlwind of motorcycle taxis carried us through the dusty streets to the gates of the Alliance Française, where our purpose awaited. Details about the Bruises National Tour Bamenda. The Show finally returns home after touring Major Cities in Cameroon.
A new band has been born. A band of ten individuals of diverse talents and skills. Made up of Singers, dancers, poets and spoken word artists, beat boxers and entrepreneurs.
Today, as we remember and honor the souls lost in Eseka, I am sharing this spoken word piece once more. It is our offering, our act of remembrance, and our testament to the fact that art can be a vessel for collective memory and healing. We remember you. We honor you. But even with this good luck, our problems weren't over. Our friend Ayeah Leonette was still missing, and the plan for the show was still just an idea in my head, trying to become real.
A message from her had come through, a cold spike of dread in the midst of the chaos. "I no go cam." The words were a gut-punch. After all we had endured, after the mountains and the rivers and the betrayals on the road, our story was now to be crippled by an absence? Despair began to set in, a cold certainty that we had fought this far only to fail at the final moment.
